Raksha Bandhan, the beloved Indian festival celebrating the bond between siblings, has proven to be a significant event for quick commerce platforms like Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart.
Both companies witnessed an impressive surge in sales, setting new records and highlighting the growing trend of online shopping during festive seasons.
This blog delves into how these platforms capitalized on the festive spirit, the milestones they achieved, and what this means for the future of quick commerce in India.
Blinkit’s Record-Breaking Performance
Blinkit, formerly known as Grofers and now owned by Zomato, saw unprecedented sales figures during Raksha Bandhan.
CEO Albinder Dhindsa took to social media platform X to share the platform's success, revealing that Blinkit achieved an astonishing 693 rakhis sold per minute at its peak.
The company also recorded its highest-ever metrics in terms of orders per minute (OPM), Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), and chocolate sales.
“We'll cross all-time high orders in a day on Blinkit in a couple of minutes. We also hit the highest ever OPM (Orders per minute), GMV, chocolate sales and most other metrics today! And at its peak - we hit 693 RPM (Rakhis per minute). Thank you to all our customers (especially the ones who placed their first Blinkit order today) for trusting our service. Happy Raksha Bandhan to all,"
Dhindsa shared.
Blinkit didn’t just stop at domestic success; they also expanded their reach internationally for Raksha Bandhan.
The company allowed customers from six countries, including the USA, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, France, and Japan, to order rakhis, showcasing their global ambitions.
Swiggy Instamart’s Festive Surge
Swiggy Instamart also experienced a tremendous surge in orders during Raksha Bandhan. Co-founder Phani Kishan expressed his excitement on X, highlighting that the platform was clocking higher orders per minute than their previous peak, which had already been a historical high.

“Raksha Bandhan celebrations are in full swing—clocking higher orders per minute (OPM) than our peak yesterday, which was already a historical high,” Kishan shared. He further added, “We expect to sell as many rakhis today as we have sold all year, and that's already 5x more than last year!”
The success continued to build on the momentum from the previous day, where Kishan had noted a significant increase in rakhi sales compared to the previous year, emphasizing the platform's growing popularity during festive times.
The Festive Season: A Catalyst for Growth
The impressive sales figures reported by both Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart during Raksha Bandhan reflect the shifting consumer behavior towards online shopping, especially during festive seasons.
These platforms have successfully tapped into the convenience factor, allowing customers to send festive essentials like rakhis and chocolates to their loved ones with just a few clicks.
The expansion into international markets by Blinkit also indicates a broader trend of Indian e-commerce platforms looking to cater to the global Indian diaspora, making it easier for them to participate in Indian festivals no matter where they are.
Conclusion
The success of Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart during Raksha Bandhan is a testament to the potential of quick commerce platforms in India.
As these platforms continue to innovate and expand, they are likely to play an increasingly significant role in how Indians celebrate festivals.
The festive season has only just begun, and if these early figures are any indication, we can expect even more remarkable milestones as we move towards Diwali and beyond.
Both companies have set the stage for a festive season filled with record-breaking sales, and their ability to meet consumer demand will be crucial in determining their long-term success in the competitive quick commerce space.
