The remarkable journey of Krutrim, an AI startup founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, who is also the co-founder and CEO of Ola Cabs.
From launching AI chips to expanding cloud services, Krutrim is positioning India as a global leader in the technology landscape.
We will dive into Krutrim’s ambitious plans, strategic partnerships, and how it is transforming the AI industry in India.
Introduction
In December last year, Bhavish Aggarwal, the visionary behind Ola Cabs, launched Krutrim, a cutting-edge AI startup that aims to make India a global superpower in the technology sector.
Fast forward to today, Krutrim is already making waves with its ambitious projects and innovative solutions.
The company recently announced that it will design, build, and launch its first AI chip by 2026, a significant milestone in the world of artificial intelligence.
The Birth of Advanced AI Chips:
Krutrim is working on developing a family of AI chips that will cater to different computing needs. The first lineup includes three chip families:
Bodhi: Focused on AI applications.
Sarv: Designed for general computing tasks.
Ojas: Built for edge computing, where data is processed closer to the source rather than in a centralized data center.
To achieve this, Krutrim has partnered with global chip-makers Arm and Untether AI, ensuring that its technology is at the forefront of innovation.
The company has also announced the development of Bodhi-II, which is scheduled for release in 2028.
Expanding Data Center Capacity
Recognizing the need for robust infrastructure, Krutrim is scaling up its data center capacity. Currently, the capacity stands at 20 MW, but by 2028, the company plans to expand it to an impressive 1 GW. This expansion is crucial for supporting the growing demands of AI and computing tasks.
The Backbone of Innovation
Earlier this year, Bhavish Aggarwal took a bold step by moving Ola’s workloads from Microsoft Azure to Krutrim’s own cloud platform, Krutrim Cloud.
This move highlights the company’s confidence in its technology and its ability to cater to a wide range of applications required by Indian developers.
At the Ola Sankalp 2024 event, Aggarwal shared some exciting statistics:
Over 50 new services launched: Krutrim AI is now equipped to handle most applications needed by Indian developers.
25,000 developers have embraced Krutrim Cloud: This showcases the platform’s growing popularity and trust among the developer community.
10 million users engaged with Krutrim Chat App: A significant milestone in user adoption.
250 billion API calls and 1 trillion tokens: These impressive figures demonstrate the platform’s scalability and efficiency.
Empowering Indian Developers
Krutrim is not just about technology; it’s about making advanced AI accessible to everyone in India. To this end, the company has announced that cloud services worth Rs 100 crore will be free until Diwali, a move aimed at encouraging more developers to explore and use Krutrim’s offerings.

“Our ambition with this company is to truly make consumption accessible to every Indian, and this is going beyond mobility,”
said Aggarwal, emphasizing Krutrim’s commitment to democratizing technology.
Innovations in Ride-Hailing and Quick Commerce
Krutrim’s impact is already being felt in various sectors. Ola Cabs, for instance, has reintroduced its Ola Share feature in Bengaluru, with plans to expand it to other cities.
Additionally, the company launched a loyalty program called Ola Coins, which can be used across various Ola services.
Aggarwal also addressed the rising trend of quick commerce, highlighting the need for automation to achieve the desired scale. To meet this demand, Krutrim is launching an automated warehouse that will be available to brands on ONDC.
